SEWC Statement on the U.S. House Passage of the Build Back Better Act

Raleigh, North Carolina -- The U.S. House of Representatives just passed the Build Back Better Act, the largest investment in clean energy, climate, and workforce development in U.S. history. The Southeastern Wind Coalition applauds this action and the multi-billion dollar investment to transform the nation’s economy.

SEWC President Katharine Kollins issued the following statement in celebration of the news:

“Passage of the Build Back Better Act will do more to usher offshore wind into the Southeast than any other action to date. This comprehensive bill prioritizes transmission, development tax credits, R&D funding, and clean manufacturing support - all of which are critical to bringing clean offshore wind to the region.”

Some of the top investments outlined in the Build Back Better Act include tax credits for offshore wind, domestic manufacturing, and funding for port infrastructure and supply chain. The legislation includes billions of dollars in grid infrastructure investments and allocates millions of dollars to transmission planning and analysis. To further support the growing U.S. offshore wind industry, the Build Back Better Act also requires the Department of Interior to hold offshore wind lease sales in federal waters in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, lifting the previously enacted offshore wind moratorium due to go into effect in 2022.

We now look to the U.S. Senate for continued leadership in ensuring that the U.S. takes advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity. With a $109B offshore wind supply chain on the line, support from Senators across the Southeast will mean tens of thousands of new jobs in the fast-growing clean energy sector and a revitalized emphasis on domestic manufacturing.
