Atlanta, GA - Last week, the Georgia Public Service Commission unanimously approved Georgia Power’s 2025 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), marking a significant step toward enabling utility-scale wind development in the state.
The Southeastern Wind Coalition is encouraged by the inclusion of wind in all modeled scenarios for the first time, with the IRP outlining a potential for up to 4,500 MW of wind to be procured or developed by 2044. This inclusion of wind energy is a move that positions Georgia to further diversify its energy sources and compete for new projects in the years ahead.
“This decision moves Georgia in the right direction toward becoming a new market for wind energy,” said Katharine Kollins, President of the Southeastern Wind Coalition. “Wind projects are driving new jobs, local tax revenue, and lease payments to landowners in other Southeastern states—and with this decision, Georgia is now positioned to unlock those same long-term economic benefits.”
The final IRP also expands the Georgia Clean and Renewable Energy Subscription (CARES) program through a new customer-driven initiative that enables large energy customers to directly procure new renewable energy resources. This creates additional market signals for developers and opens the door for new capital for future projects, including wind. Program participants will be able to purchase up to 3,000 MW of customer-identified resources through 2035, as part of Georgia Power’s plan to procure up to 4,000 MW of renewables over the next decade.
“By taking this first step, Georgia is helping create a clearer pathway for developers and customers interested in wind energy projects,” added Kollins. “This decision lays the groundwork for private investment that can bring real, long-term value to communities across the state.”
