Raleigh, N.C. - Today, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein signed Executive Order 23, establishing the North Carolina Energy Policy Task Force to strengthen the state’s electricity infrastructure and energy affordability. Southeastern Wind Coalition President, Katharine Kollins, has been appointed as a member of the Energy Policy Task Force to support the recommendation of policies to strengthen the state’s clean energy economy by managing increasing electricity demand while maintaining affordability, reliability, and carbon emissions reductions.

The Southeastern Wind Coalition applauds Governor Stein’s leadership and efforts to advance North Carolina’s clean energy economy. As the renewable energy industry continues to navigate the recent shifts in federal and state policy including the accelerated retirement of tax credits, elimination of the interim carbon emissions reduction goal, and overall investment uncertainty, it is more important than ever to maintain state-level support for wind energy.

Despite this uncertainty, wind energy remains one of the most competitive forms of generation and it will continue to play a role in the buildout of new power generation in the US, especially considering the high power demand environment where renewables stand out as both the lowest-cost and quickest-to-deploy generation resources.

“We are proud to join Governor Stein in his commitment to facilitate critical clean energy commitments that will stabilize electricity prices, reduce our reliance on carbon, and advance North Carolina’s economic future through jobs and infrastructure investments,” said SEWC’s President Katharine Kollins.

“As North Carolina continues to grow, I am honored to be part of this important task force to diversify the state's energy mix, ensure the viability of long-lead time resources, and control long-term costs through investment in clean energy technologies.” Kollins added.

The task force will submit an annual report to the Governor, the General Assembly, the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority, and the general public.
